Born in 2007, Varnish is steeped in the influence of dark, jangled pop via post-punk UK music that was dressed to kill and to do it fabulously, as well as "pre-punk" New York City bands that set the stage for the modern and alternative rock scenes that came next. Music where confusion becomes clarity and the extremes of human emotion are separated by a precariously thin tightrope, all backlit by a beautiful dissonance.
The band’s co-founders Amber Bird, lead singer and lyricist with an intense live delivery, and Jason Cope, a refreshingly unique guitarist, have managed to hook up with some of the city’s finest up-and-coming post-punk rock royalty. Bassist Johnny Straube is the guitarist and lead singer for highly praised Post Adolescence, whilst drummer aNdi pUzL can be found pounding out rhythms for The Sound of Speed.
Live performances are thick with emotional authenticity and showcase the band’s varied tastes. Sets are filled with songs that inhabit similar space but don’t all sound the same. If you can't catch them live, you can rub up against the experience via their recordings.
The initial recording sessions for their EP Each to Each, which included original drummer Ben Crosby, took place at the world famous London Bridge studios before moving to Soul Kitchen, the studio of producer Mark Clem (Blanco y Negro, Post Adolescence). The tracks were then sent off to RFI-CD Mastering to be mastered by Ed Brooks (Pearl Jam, Fleet Foxes).
With live shows that never disappoint and an EP that fans have found worth the wait, it’s obvious that Varnish are set for big things.
